Award-Winning
Documentary
to be Shown at UNI Museum January 16
Posted 13 January
2010
The award-winning film "Born into Brothels" will be shown at 1:30 p.m.
Saturday, Jan.16, at the University of Northern Iowa Museum. The
documentary follows eight children who live in the red light district
of Calcutta, where their mothers work as prostitutes.
The 2004 film was written and directed by Zana Briski and Ross
Kauffman. Briski, a New York-based photographer, gave each child a
camera and taught them photography in return for photographing their
mothers. Much of the children's work is featured in the film, which
also shows the children in class and in everyday life in the red light
district. Briski also documents the efforts to get the children into
boarding schools to better their lives. The film won an Oscar in 2005
for Best Documentary Feature and has also earned awards at the Sundance
Film Festival, National Board of Review and Independent Spirit Awards.
The event is free and open to the public. The University Museum is
located on Hudson Road and is open from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday
through Friday, and from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday.
The museum also features an African Art collection, woodcarvings from
the Asmat people of New Guinea, masks from around the world, Moroccan
art past to present and more.
