Holiday
Travelers
Urged to Give the Gift of Life - Use Seat Belts
Posted 22 December
2009
A major winter storm is possible across the state beginning Tuesday
evening and continuing through Friday afternoon. Motorists can expect a
wintery mix of precipitation over this period, including freezing rain,
patchy drizzle, sleet, and snow, which will make travel increasingly
difficult.
“The timing of this winter storm is very poor considering this is also
a peak holiday travel period,” said Dena Gray-Fisher, spokesperson for
the Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT). “While everyone is anxious
to spend time with friends and family, it simply may not be worth the
risk if road conditions deteriorate.”
Gray-Fisher urges travelers to give the gift of life this holiday
season by making their personal safety, and the safety of their
passengers and others sharing the roadway their number one priority.
If you do travel, be sure everyone is buckled up --- all persons, all
seating positions and at all times.
The best chance for freezing rain will be across the southern half of
the state. Where freezing rain remains the predominant type of
precipitation, there is potential for approximately one quarter inch of
icing. Localized flooding could also occur.
A significant winter storm will begin to affect the state on Wednesday.
Heavy snow in excess of 10 to 14 inches is forecast for northwest Iowa
(west of Carroll to the Mason City line). Communities along the
southern edge of this boundary line may see 4 to 6 inches of snow.
Strong northerly winds of 20 to 30 mph, with higher gusts, will develop
Thursday and create widespread blowing snow Thursday into Friday. The
wind, combined with the snow, will reduce visibilities to less than one
mile, with frequent visibilities of one half to one quarter of a mile
in the heavier snow areas. Drifting of roadways can be expected as well.
Trip planning and regular monitoring of changing weather and road
conditions will be keys to safe travel during this winter event. For
winter road condition information, call 511 or visit www.511ia.org (the low bandwidth 511
site provides optimal access during peak usage times). |
